SMF 1.1.x to phpBB3

Install Stalling Offline - SMF 1.1.x to phpBB3

Install Stalling Offline

I'm using SMF 1.1.18 which is the most recent version of the SMF 1.1.x family and still supported. I'm trying to convert to the latest version of phpBB which currently is 3.0.11. First question... should this converter work on these versions?

Just in case, I've been trying it. No success yet, but it looks promising. Here's the background:

I run SMF on a dedicated production server. I successfully backed up all files and the db. I restored them to a second, separate dedicated dev/testing server which is managed by a hosting provider. I successfully created a new install of phpBB 3.0.11 into domain.com/forums and copied the files from SMF to domain.com/forum (no 's'). I also imported the SMF data into a new, clean db on the dev server. I followed all of the instructions for using converters. phpBB saw your converter, saw my files, saw my separate db, and reported that it was ready to convert... but soon after starting the conversion I got the 500 error. Since this is a managed server, I do not have access to the system files to modify the php and apache settings. So I added the settings recommended in the FAQ thread to the install_convert.php file. Same result.

Since I can't change the dedicated server, I installed WampServer locally to do the conversion offline. I not only did the same above but I also modified php and apache settings locally. It seems to be working, because I got much further. But in the end, it stalled again.

It feels like I'm close, because after the failed conversion, phpBB shows that I have the right amount of posts, threads, the boards moved over... even the most users online was correct. But since it couldn't go all the way through, not all users were imported, although total posts was correct, each board showed zero threads.

1. Can you help get me through what appears to be just a few small final steps?
2. What other info would you need?
3. If it's easier to convert to something else and then phpBB, I'm willing to try.

Thanks in advance,
Don
