phpBB 3.1 Annual Stars

Long list of stars - phpBB 3.1 Annual Stars

Long list of stars

by javiexin » Sat Nov 26, 2016 6:13 pm

Hi,

As you know, the list of stars may become quite long when the forums are mature. This creates an issue with very long strings of stars, as they may occupy two lines, or simply they look too much.

My suggestion would be to add a "quinquennial" star every five years, so that it reduces the amount of space occupied. I understand that this might be something that people would like to choose, but building an ACP settings page just for this configuration seems a bit overkill...

If you want it, I have this coded for my own usage. Just let me know. Or you could do it in a very very short time as well!

Regards,

Only thing missing would be the images...and it should probably go out to ten years.

I'm using your extension in a 3.2.1 forum, but I've made some changes to get the quinquennial star that javiexin suggested. ;) The result for 10 and 6 years:
annualStars1.png
annualStars1.png (2.71 KiB) Viewed 88 times
annualStars2.png
annualStars2.png (2.92 KiB) Viewed 85 times
I'm not sure, I think the 5 years image is from an old MOD with similar characteristics.

About the 10 years star, maybe two digits is too much for the default star size. Indeed, the 5 years star is a little bigger, so the decade star would need a yet bigger star.

Quite ugly, can I say? :)

All of this can be achieved using font-awesome icons and a bit of css, and Twig..
which would take this extension to a level up, a new stage, where stars are automated, with maybe different colors (say a color for 10, a color for 5 etc..), or maybe not full-filled with the golden color but depending on the percentual, just pure mathematic.

What I am talking about, though, requires a bit of code rewrite as well, of the extension I mean.

Dunno if Rich volunteers. 8-)

On a side note, what has been above detailed is what I saw in action 15/16 years ago, in a forum written is .ASP, where I was part of the site's team. At those times there were neither Twig nor FA.

The stars? Yes and they are GIFs.

Do you mean replacing the phpBB templates of the extension with Twig or also some of the PHP code?

I was looking for an extension like this and though it would be ideal but, my forum is 18 years old so you can imagine the star list could get a little crowded!

Has any more work been done on the idea of quinquennial stars? Or some other solution?
