Edit Subscribers Stopped Working

by neo314 » Thu Feb 21, 2019 3:06 am

I have used edit subscribers a number of times, but today it stopped working. When I enter a username and hit enter it does not search. When I go to the user, check the checkbox, make changes, and click submit, nothing happens.

Nothing is showing up in the browser console. It is happening in Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome. I rebooted. I disabled and enabled the extension. No luck. I re-uploaded the files. No change. It is like there is something wrong with the form all of a sudden preventing it from submitting.

Any idea why this would happen or what to try next?

Does this happen ONLY when you search for a name?

It could be that you hit some sort of PHP max_input_vars limit. The form is dense with dozens of input fields, checkboxes, etc. for every row on the page, since each row can be expanded to show lots of fields. In the ACP in Digests General Settings there is a "Subscribers per page" field that controls how many rows appear on this screen. The default is 20 rows. You can try reducing the number as see if it starts working correctly.

Javascript has to be enabled but presumably that is not the issue. Presumably you are following instructions, enter a string in the search field, then press enter as opposed to clicking on any buttons.

You might want to see what your max_input_vars limit is using the PHP Information screen. The default should be 1000.

FYI, to get around the dense number of fields problem, when the form is submitted only fields that have been changed are sent to the web server.

Also, it could be some sort of integration that is causing the issue, since apparently it was working correctly before. If you have ModSecurity enabled, try disabling it.

I'll look for max vars but it worked before. There was a cpanel update so maybe something else. I reduced the users per page to 5 and it still didn't work. I also never checked more than one person doing an update. It does not appear to be an extension conflict. I have tried disabling all the extensions twice and it still doesn't work.

It is most likely environmental. Definitely look into any security packages that my be installed in cPanel and disable to see if that solves the problem.

Max Input Vars was still 1000 and I tried raising it to 10,000 and still no luck. I also tried dropping back from 7.2 to 5.6 and that did not help either.

It almost looks like it is saying there is a validation error, is that possible? Also, regarding max vars and other environment issues, the form does not post at all. It acts like a validation problem with no feedback or bad HTML.

I test for validation errors before release and there were no issues. There are four warnings, three of which are not due to the extension but are issues with phpBB's templates. The one warning is for an empty header.

It can't hurt to run the validator on your end and see if something weird pops up. Just view the source and copy and paste it into the W3C validator.

I got the same validation results.

Why does yours say asset_version 1881 and mine is 25?

Apparently this tracks the number of times the cache has been cleared.

Well, I am at a loss. Let me know if you want to look at it. I did try the Opera browser to see if I got any different results (BTW Chrome on my phone does the same thing). The Opera Browser is the only time there was console output.

Holy heck! So I tried Safari for Windows version 5.1.7 and it works like it worked in all the current browsers when I first installed it. I wonder if it is possible that there is some JS issue that recent browser updates don't like?

You got me. I can't reproduce your Javascript error, but maybe I need to use your browser version. The error seems to be complaining that because certain fields can't be seen (they are collapsed) you can't focus on them. This is definitely true until the row is exposed. It may be a new error being trapped by newer browsers.

I'm curious if clearing the temporary files in your browsers makes the problem better.

I tried clearing the Browser. The errors in the Opera console may or may not be the problem. That was just the first time I could get output of any kind. The issue occurs in the current versions of Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Internet Explorer, and Chrome for Android. It works on Safari which is outdated and a different standard.

I could PM you the page source from the form to compare to yours. I have 1 custom profile field, but that was there when it was working. It is a weird mystery. At least I do not have to worry about not updating Safari for Windows.

You are the first to report this error. I can't explain it. No need to send me the HTML source because the templates generate the same source. The only thing that is different is data coming out of a database. Maybe it's an operating system thing. I am using a Mac with Vivaldi (Chromium based) as my browser.
