FAQ #2 Clarification Please [SOLVED]

by rlaughton » Sat Aug 31, 2019 4:11 pm

This one here: Why can't Users Use The [media] BBCode?
https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/exte ... d/faq/2831
Also note that if any of the permissions are set to NEVER, then it won't work in that case...period! For example, if one of your Forum's is set to NEVER for Registered users, then even you, as an Admin, won't be allowed to use it in that forum even if your Admin permission was set to yes. For this it is always helpful to look at your Forum Permission Masks:

Go to
ACP
Permissions
View Forum Based Permissions
Select one of your forums (or all of them)
Select a User or Group and click View permissions
View the Content tabs of each forum
I got the extension installed after upgrading to 3.2.7 but it still shows up as [media]https://youtu.be/4I7nSRILovg[/media] instead of an image.

I checked all the GROUPS and there are "Pre-defined groups" such as GUESTS and BOTS that have permissions set to NEVER and those cannot be changed. Does this NEVER rule apply to these groups also or just the "User defined groups"?

If I go to the PERMISSIONS and check "View forum-based permissions" the GUESTS are on that list but not the BOTS, so perhaps the BOTS are exempt from the rule but GUESTS are not.

NEWLY REGISTERED USERS also have limited roles and are not enabled for [img] or [media] in Private Messages which could also be a problem.

Does the term if any of the permissions are set to NEVER refer to just the [media] BBCode tag permissions or "any" permission, such as the [img] tag?

That is only referring to the two permissions mentioned in that FAQ. If you can never use BBCodes then it's a given you wouldn't ever be able to use the [media] BBcode regardless of what the permission is set to for using it.

Okay thanks, I had tried just those and it still did not work. I thought the ANY of the permissions are set to NEVER just might meant that, so I changed them all on my test forum.

To be absolutely sure I gave every group full permissions and still no luck, I still get [media]https://youtu.be/4I7nSRILovg[/media] instead of an image, so it must be another problem. No idea where to go from here to get it to work.

And what happens when posting without the media tag?

Do you mean if I just put the URL? That works fine.

I did try it on the YouTube .be and .com sites to be sure.

Here are the actual test posts (on an old site I use for testing - just updated to 3.2.7 this morning).

https://laughton.ca/forums/lts/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=41

HANG ON A MINUTE! I went here and YouTube was not checked. I did not change any of these, I assumed they would all be set as ON in the default:

Manage Media Embed Sites

Now I have to wait a few minutes .... it goes off-line for 5-10 minutes when I make changes.

No difference, even tried one from ABC NEWS.

I see why you asked about just posting a link, it should have changed that to embedded:
Convert plain URLs:
Enable this to convert plain URLs (not wrapped in [media] or [url] tags) to embedded media content. Note that changing this setting will only affect new posts, as existing posts have already been parsed.

ME STUPID! I DELETED THE "GUESTS" SO YOU CAN NOT SEE THE EXAMPLES, YOU JUST HAVE TO BELIEVE ME THAT THEY WORK - SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE TIME DELAY?

I have now fixed the problem ABOVE. I still had GUESTS but I had removed the "Read Access" in error. That has now been re-established so the links work.

DavidIQ:

You have to see this!

I did nothing but came back several hours later to check on other places where I had BBCode and I noticed a YouTube video that was working. See this topic:

https://laughton.ca/forums/lts/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=14

So I thought, this is another case of a TIME DELAY in the system to make the changes. I went back to the original test topic and tried the YouTube link with and without the {media} and they both work!

https://laughton.ca/forums/lts/viewtopic.php?p=61#p61

I cannot explain why it works after hours left alone - is this a case of what I have heard mentioned as "parsing"?

The OLDER posts made today do not work but the new ones do - very strange (at least to me!).

PROBLEM SOLVED! It is working now. For some reason the YOUTUBE check box on the POSTING / MEDIA EMBED / MANAGE SITES gets "unchecked". It seems that is the only check box affected. I put it back again and all is working! :D

I prepared a summary as to where I stand now on this issue and posted that on our CEFSG BOARD. As you can see, I can get it to work on my TEST BOARD but not on the important CEFSG BOARD. Are there other known issues other than the PERMISSIONS that I may have missed?
The upgrade has been completed to the latest phpBB3 system (3.2.7).

The MEDIA EXTENSION has now been added to the Board. You can read about the extension on the phpBB site here:

phpBB Media Embed PlugIn

I have been able to get the MEDIA exension to work on my TEST LTS FORUM, at least with some of the media providers. YOUTUBE works fine, which is what is mainly used here at the CEFSG. I also tested SPORTSNET which worked fine but ABC NEWS did not. That may be related to what link I am posting - more work on that issue required.

You can see I have tested Ted's videos, a Norm Christie video, and a few others here:

Testing the Upgrade from php 3.2.5 to 3.2.7

That means the embedded media tag does work on phpBB3.2.7.

I have duplicated that process of upgrading the new phpBB software and changing all the required permissions (or so I believe), and so now the media inserts should work here as well. Both sites also have the same SSL certificate type installed and are on the same HOST. Other than the content, there should be no difference between the two boards.

There is a known issue if any of the USERS or GROUPS have their permissions set to NEVER for any of the FORUMS (see FAQ #2). Even an ADMINISTRATOR is locked out of using the media code if any else is shown as NEVER. I have checked them all and I don't see any marked in that manner. Although it appears that the GUESTS are set at NEVER in the "PERMISSIONS / PERMISSIONS MASKS / VIEW FORUM BASED PERMISSIONS", I checked this CEFSG board and my LTS test board and they are really marked as NO on the "PERMISSIONS / FORUM BASED PERMISSIONS / FORUM PERMISSIONS / GUESTS" (options are YES - NO - NEVER) but that does not show on the PERMISSIONS, just YES or NEVER.

You would add Ted's Amiens video by inserting the YouTube link or the link with the MEDIA code (the little screen beside the "Normal" in the menu above). So you would insert one of the following:

Code: Select all

https://youtu.be/LX_txORVhVc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LX_txORVhVc
Those should result in a video being visible if we remove the markers:

https://youtu.be/LX_txORVhVc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LX_txORVhVc

or put the abobe links within the new MEDIA tag:

[media]https://youtu.be/LX_txORVhVc[/media]

[media]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LX_txORVhVc[/media]

If you don't use the tag, the system installs it for you .... well that is once it is working. As you can see here it is not!
