Redirection of Page fails. 'Enable URL Rewriting'

by nullAndVoid » Fri Sep 18, 2020 1:35 am

I don't know that this is a phpBB issue; I am seeking clues!

I am running phpBB 3.2.9, with the Pages extension 2.0.4.
I created a page, and can see it.
I tried to get rid of the "app.php/" in the URL, via 'Enable URL Rewriting'. (The apache server does have mod_rewrite enabled.) For instance, from
example.com/app.php/welcome to
example.com/welcome

The phpBB .htaccess does indeed have its rewrite rule. Yet, hitting the latter URL gets a 404 'Not found'. (The apache logs show nothing more.) The former URL (with 'app.php/') does still work.
I have wondered whether the access rules in /etc/apache2/apache2.conf are responsible, but I cannot debug them when I am not dealing with real files and directories! (I expect that the "welcome" page comes from the database, not from a directory under /var/www/. Thus, it's hard to fiddle with paths, with the aim of testing apache's response.)

Any clue would be appreciated. Search has proved futile, both here and elsewhere.

Figured it out. It's ye old AllowOverride! It used to be None, now it is All.

/etc/apache2/apache2.conf:
<Directory /var/www/>
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride All
Require all granted
</Directory>
