May I make a suggestion?

by Bullseye! » Tue Mar 07, 2017 12:16 pm

This is a very good extension, what would make it even better is if the it could auto-rotate an image by using the exif data, in the same way that flickr does it..

Thank you for your compliment and your suggestion.
I don't think I will implement this in the near future, mainly for the following reasons:
  • this extension does nothing on the main image presentation, it just adds a block of text below the image
  • Rotating images should be done in first place in the uploader's local environment, because he should know how his image is orientated
  • some image editors rotate images without adjusting the orientation flag in exif data, so rotating such an image as a board attachment would be wrong
  • If rotating can't be done in the uploader's local environment (because he is on a mobile phone or has no image editor or ...) it should be done during the upload process at uploader's choice. E.g. add rotate left / right / reverse buttons near the image in the upload form, but that should be part of phpBB core functions
Maybe the last point can be done by a separate extension, but therefore I have to check the core functions for proper events, and, because the upload process was afaik rewritten from 3.1 to 3.2, it would only go into 3.2

Ok thankyou for your response, what I am doing at the moment is downloading users image rotating it & then reuploading, they think it's automatic anyway, because I normally do it so quickly ;)

That should be the case, but I'm not sure if it is working properly in any usecase. I've seen a lot of complains about wrong orientation esp. from iPhone images, but also from other mobiles. And, if plupload is deactivated for any reason, rotating must be performed otherwise
