Migrate Newsletters from Mass email HTML MOD

by Alien_Time » Sun Mar 17, 2013 9:53 am

Hi Martin,

Your MOD looks interesting. I have been using the Mass email HTML V 0.6.3 MOD for the past 2 years and recently I started receiving a lot of 500 server errors when trying to send emails from that MOD. I remember you had recommended your mod a while ago in that Mass email Html mod's topic since that author wasnt responding that time. For a long time, I have been considering to move to your MOD and now I think its time to do it. This is my only concern - At the moment, I have heaps of past emails already stored in newsletter.php of this Mass email HTML MOD. It contains all the newsletters I have been sending using that MOD over the past 2 years or more. If I install your MOD now, would I loose all the newsletters that were stored previously? Is there a way to migrate those newsletters to your MOD's newsletter archive?

Also, can I send html email with html tags, etc.,? I mean, the other mod uses the tiny_mce editor where I simply paste my html codes that generates the html email. Would your mod work in a similar way or something when sending html emails?

Thanks Martin. Looking forward to hear from you.

I am happy to see that you are still developing this MOD and its not abandoned unlike Mass email HTML MOD.

Hello Alien_Time,
I have no converter from Mass email HTML MOD. But I think it could be done quite easily.

For all other questions you can find answers at the FAQs: https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/mod/ ... dd_on/faq/

Thank you Martin.

Regarding creating the HTML email, I tried reading the customize_emails.xml file in the contrib folder and I dont quite understand. First, I cant locate the root/includes/newsletter/html.php and root/includes/newsletter/plain.php. Second, is there a way to add html tags inside the message itself? When I looked at the newsletter_html.txt, I noticed that it has the html structure there but the message is just simple text format with bbcodes maybe. I am planning to have a proper html email message with images, div tags in its contents, etc.. How can I achieve that with your mod? Is that possible?

Thanks Martin.

Hello Alien_Time,
I have to update the instructions.
root/includes/newsletter/html.php and root/includes/newsletter/plain.php have been replaced by root/newsletter_view.php .

The txt files are creating the content of the newsletter e-mails. The css file is responsible to the layout.

Are you sure, that your users will like overloaded newsletter e-mails which are looking like spam e-mails?

But now-a-days, HTML emails are getting a lot more common and most of the email clients and browsers are able to display html emails quite nicely. I actually think a nicely designed (not spammy!) html emails increase the clickthrough rate. I also know that my users like the html email since it has more visual appealing and very helpful for users who just glance through the emails. The images and various div sections nicely shows the update. If designed properly, it should not look like a spam. Thats why I was actually looking for an html email mod that gives full control in styling the message. With you mod, even if I use the css file, how can I style the actual message using html?

Hello Alien_Time,
you have to put the html code into the txt file.

The html code changes for each newsletter. So do I need to change the text file each time? If I do that, will it affect the old newsletters that are archived?
