I've gotten the blogs stats to appear on the index page, but only the number of blogs. I had the number of comments beforehand, but suddenly it's gone. I still have the edit -- {TOTAL_BLOG_COMMENTS} -- but apparently that doesn't work anymore :/

It seems author is not active here, You can borrow code from any of portal mod that have user blog block...
