I would like to change some basic colours / transparency but do not know how...
Is it possible to make the entire "outside white area" semi transparent? If so how?

You will need to learn how to edit CSS and read the prosilver documentation.
To make the white border transparent, you will need to edit the images in photoshop or another editor and change the opacity. The corners are png but the rest of it a gif file, you will need to change to png to get alpha transparency.
