Language Packs Installation Instructions - American English
Language Packs Installation Instructions
I've just installed and configured phpBB3 for the first time yesterday. And I'm having a couple of questions regarding the installation of language packs - in particular, the one for American English:
1. The online instructions in two different locations differ: One (http://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/trans ... /faq/f_565) says to "upload the language files to your web host, into the phpBB root directory"; the other (docs/README.html#i18n) says to "simply download the required language pack and unarchive it into the languages/ folder". In practice, neither of these seems to work: I found that in order to get the language pack to install, I had to go into the hierarchy of directories contained in the language pack archive (us_english_1_0_2.zip in my case) and locate the "en-us" folder, and move this folder into the {phpbb root}/languages folder - only then would the Administrator tools appear to properly locate the language pack and allow it to be installed. I'd just like to know, if I am missing something here.
2. In traversing the hierarchy of directories contained in the language pack archive (us_english_1_0_2.zip in my case) I see that there are also some "styles" directories - in particular, for "prosilver" and "subsilver2". What, if anything, is meant to be done with these styles directories? Replace the ones that installed by default along with phpbb-3.0.8? Is there some means within phpBB3 by which the style imagesets are supposed to be switched when changing the default language of an entire board? Well, it would be easier to see what is going on, if I were changing to a very different language like Arabic or Russian, whereas perhaps the differences between the imagesets for American and British English may be small or nonexistent...
Okay; thanks very much--

In fact, in the past, we used a zip file to decompress into the languages/ directory because there was only the language files included in it. Now, thanks to our new system, our zip file contains languages files and localized imagesets. That's why you have to upload your languages/ and styles/ directories (located the decompressed language pack) into your phpBB root (so overwrite the existing ones).

Yeah you're right, they are in fact nonexistent. Unfortunately, if you don't do that and if you use American English (or another foreign language) as language to be dispayed, phpBB will detect that the appropriate imageset, related to the language, are not installed, but it will not replace them by the default ones. You'll see a blank space instead, no images at all.
I hope you understood me .
See ya,
